Prepare Early

English majors are advised to begin keeping a portfolio of work produced from their required courses and electives as soon as you have identified yourself as an English major -preferably in your sophomore year.

To prepare, keep an ungraded copy of all major assignments in your English courses, lower and upper division, as well as your upper division interdisciplinary GE courses. It is also generally a good idea to keep graded copies; provide your professors with a self-addressed stamped envelope or make arrangements to pick up your work so that you can ensure you receive final projects/papers back at the end of each semester.

You may consult your advisor for assistance in developing the portfolio.

Timing

The portfolio will be reviewed by the Capstone professor as a prerequisite to admission into Capstone toward the end of the semester before you plan to graduate (see Important Dates and Deadlines ).

Currently, we have two Capstone courses: English: Literature and Writing (contact Professor Joan Peters ) and one for English Education (contact Professor Mary Adler).

After you contact the Capstone professor, she/he will accept your portfolio and briefly discuss your readiness for Capstone. Then she/he will forward your portfolio to a committee of English faculty members for evaluation. Following evaluation, she/he will contact you with the results.

For information about what to include in your portfolio, check out the Frequently Asked Questions and review the appropriate assessment guidelines, below.

Assessment

Beginning in Fall 2006, the program will begin using Portfolio Assessment Guidelines. Please familiarize yourself with these assessments and bring any questions to your advisor.

Regardless of when you submit, you are asked to include a Portfolio Cover Sheet for each of the five papers.

At the end of the Capstone, when all course requirements have been fulfilled for the major, there will be a review of the final portfolio.
