Mary Adler received her B.A. degree in history from the University Of California, Los Angeles, her M.A. in English and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, both at the University at Albany, State University Of New York. She specializes in English education, classroom discourse studies, writing development and processes, literature instruction, and literacy practices. She is the author (with Eija Rougle) of a book for middle school teachers titled Building Literacy Through Classroom Discussion, and is currently at work on a book about teaching creative writing.

At CSUCI she teaches courses in Adolescent Literature, Writing as Reflective Practice, Capstone, Language in Social Context, Literacy in the Content Areas, and Media Literacy and Youth Culture.

When not teaching, she engages in fascinating literature conversations with her 5 year old twins.
