Mary Adler received her B.A. degree in history from the University Of California, Los Angeles, her M.A. in English and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, both at the University at Albany, State University Of New York. She specializes in English education, classroom discourse studies, writing development and processes, literature instruction, and literacy practices. She is currently finishing work on a book for middle school teachers titled Building Literacy Through Classroom Discussion.

At CSUCI she teaches courses in Adolescent Literature, Writing as Reflective Practice, Capstone, Language in Social Context, Literacy in the Content Areas, and Media Literacy and Youth Culture.

When not teaching, she plays and converses with her young twins, writes fiction, and engages in deep philosophical discussions of Iron Chef with her husband, Bryan.
