English Course Descriptions

Course descriptions are organized into three areas: Foundational/Core Courses, Interdisciplinary Courses, and Electives. A listing of courses by number can be found in the current University Catalog .

Foundational courses are required for all students in the major and represent the core of the English program at CSUCI. These offer students breadth and depth in the discipline and include literature survey courses and in-depth author(s) studies as well as a focus on linguistics, literary theory, and writing.

Interdisciplinary courses are a unique and valuable focus within academic programs at CSUCI. Students are required to take at least three upper division interdisciplinary general education courses prior to graduation; at least one of these courses must be outside the major.

Elective courses provide all students on campus with the opportunity to explore further an area of interest. English majors are required to take at least 6 units of English electives; they may choose from a diverse array of courses that range from Bilingual Literary Studies (ENGL 311) to the Drama Of Ancient Greece (ENGL 412) to Contemporary Literature (ENGL 400) and beyond.
